Woman Killed in Pacific Spirit Park at UBC.
Many of you have heard that Wendy Ladner-Beaudry was killed in PSP at UBC while jogging by a random attacker. Here are some safety tips you should keep in mind when running or jogging:
1. Plan: Always plan the route ahead of time and ensure that somebody else is aware of the route. When you’re planning the route, be sure to take into consideration the following: amount of Lighting available ( it’s better to run/jog/excercise in well lit places), amount of people around you, how familiar you are with the route, and where help can be obtained if need be. Also have a escape plan prepared.
2. Prepare: Always pack the following: Whistle (or attention gathering device), map, and Cell Phone. Whistle to make noise, map in case you get lost, cell phone to call people
3. While Running: Try your best to run with a buddy or a dog (not one of those tiny crappy dogs) that way you’re not alone. Be aware. Try not to run with headphones. It would be very easy for someone to sneak up behind you when you’re not paying attention. If you do see somebody you’re not comfortable around be sure to run away to a much more visable and busy location. Also be sure to avoid running at night.
Enjoy.
