Things you should know about when switching from Gi to No-Gi

So it’s Summer, and wearing a Gi get’s really hot. Lately i’ve been training without a Gi and here’s what i’ve found so far.

I like lists.

1. Choking – Wow, Choking someone without a Gi on is a lot more difficult. Normally, grabbing a sleeve would result in a pretty locked in Choke, without the sleeves, I found that Arm Triangle Chokes work best. (Miles calls it “catching the mouse”)

2. Grabbing Points are totally different. Without a Gi, I had to resort back to where i used to grab when I was wrestling. That means when I grab people it works better to grab above the elbow above the wrist. Unhooks and Overhooks are important too.

3. Sweeps – Without a Gi, Sweeping is a lot harder. Again the grabbing of the lapel is non existent anymore so sweeping sucks. I suggest you stay off your back at all costs.

Suggestion? Additions?
