How to: Build your own MATS

June 15th, 2009

BUILD AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AND FRANCISLAU.ORG ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES YOU MAY INCUR FROM BUILDING THESE MATS.

Tools Required: Staple Gun, Caulking Gun (for Glue), Knife, Circular Saw

Materials (per matt): Glue, Staples, Sheet of 5/16″(or 3/8″ if need be) Plywood, 1-2 Inch Foam/Polystyrene Insulation, Vinyl Fabric or Plether

How To:

1. Cut the Plywood  and Insulation to the the preferred size (for each section of your mat – I get lazy and I usually cut the plywood to the same size as the insulation or vice versa)

2. Line em up, and glue the two pieces together. For now, let’s call the insulation side the top and the plywood side the bottom. Wait for Drying.

3. Cut your Vinyl Fabric so that it is 8 inches wider and longer than your preferred mat size.

4. Place the mat (bottom facing you) on the absolute center of the the vinyl (smooth side facing the ground).

5. Wrap that up like a Christmas present and staple together

6. Done.

Once you have the mats done, they are going to slide around and move. There are two solutions, use Wrestling Mat Tape to hold everything together or get a Ratchet Fastener (non bungee cable) and ratchet the thing together.
