Things you should know about when switching from Gi to No-Gi

May 16th, 2010

So it’s Summer, and wearing a Gi get’s really hot. Lately i’ve been training without a Gi and here’s what i’ve found so far.

I like lists.

1. Choking – Wow, Choking someone without a Gi on is a lot more difficult. Normally, grabbing a sleeve would result in a pretty locked in Choke, without the sleeves, I found that Arm Triangle Chokes work best. (Miles calls it “catching the mouse”)

2. Grabbing Points are totally different. Without a Gi, I had to resort back to where i used to grab when I was wrestling. That means when I grab people it works better to grab above the elbow above the wrist. Unhooks and Overhooks are important too.

3. Sweeps – Without a Gi, Sweeping is a lot harder. Again the grabbing of the lapel is non existent anymore so sweeping sucks. I suggest you stay off your back at all costs.

Getting back into the groove of things!

April 13th, 2010

It’s been a while since a last posted, and recently after reading tony’s blog, I’ve decided to make more time to blog and what not. So what better way to get back into the groove of things than by talking about how I get back into the gym after a long break.

I like making lists.

1. Take her easy – Try not to overload yourself by going to 5 or 6 classes a week. Last time i did that after a break i just got burned out.

2. Work on the Basics – The basics should be the foundation of more advanced techniques. Master these and your advanced stuff should look a lot better

3. Keep a Routine Going – No doubt about it, you’re going to be sore after the first 2 or 3 classes, don’t stop, just keep attending classes.

4. Teach – If you’re sucking, try teaching some younger belts. That will force you to think about the technique so it becomes more clear in your mind.

Enjoy!

New Techniques

March 30th, 2010

So, I’ve always talked up about how awesome Hapkido is in self defense where you need to injure a person quickly. Today, I will talk about my favorite technique that I love to use if I don’t want to or need to seriously injure someone.

So this came to me over the past 2 weeks where i’ve been hit in the ear twice and both times, i’ve had to treat cauliflower ear. So pretty much what i’ve done since then is switch all the strikes to the head in to strikes to the ear. It’s a good trade off when the douche bag punches you in the head and you counter with a stiff smack or grind to the ear. He may have given me a black eye (it’ll heal in 2 weeks), but he gets a Fat Ear that he has to tell people about for the rest of his life.

I love it.
